"A ferociously good quartet" - San Francisco Classical Voice
The Eclipse Quartet is a new music ensemble dedicated to the music of late twentieth century and present day composers in addition to the creation of works of their own. This quartet is made up of four women with strong backgrounds in international and national chamber music performance, new music and recording. Their combined experience represents a wide range of musical styles and collaborations.
Eclipse’s repertoire contains works by such composers as Julia Wolfe, Terri Riley, John Zorn, Fred Frith, Philip Glass and Loius Vierk. They have also premiered new works by Zeena Parkins, Carla Kihlstedt, Justin Haynes, and David Jaffe. The quartet often collaborates with film makers, visual artists and performance artists, exploring the interaction of the seen and the heard.
In May 2006, the quartet’s recording of the string quartets of Zeena Parkins was released on the Tzadik label. Eclipse composed and recorded an original score for a dance film called “Opium” by the Suddenly Dance company which was made for and aired on the Canadian Bravo! station and was featured at Lincoln Center in the 35th annual Dance on Camera Festival. The quartet has also created original music for a film, 4 E Clips, by Ikue Mori as well as a live performance score to Suddenly Dance’s latest film, Nature’s Ecstasy. The 2007-8 season includes collaborations with guitarist, Marco Cappelli, with shows in NYC, LA and Naples, Italy as well as performances at the Getty museum in LA of a song cycle/theater piece by Sara Kirkland Snyder, performed by Ellen McLaughlin and directed by Lisa Rothe.
